I had always thought that a body lotion after showering was enough. I used serums on my face, but I had never really considered doing the same for the skin on my body.
Then one day, while talking to a friend about our skincare routines, body serums came up. My first reaction was pretty simple: why would I need another product if I already use a body lotion?
I was curious, so I did a little research and decided to try one for myself. I started with MASTER OF BOOSTING Energizing Concentrate by BODIQ, simply because I wanted to understand what a body serum could actually add to my routine.
The first thing I discovered: a body serum is not simply another body lotion
That was probably my biggest question.
I expected it to feel much like a lotion – perhaps a little more fluid, but not particularly different. BOOSTING felt different. Its texture is lightweight and easy to spread over the skin.
But as I researched it further, I realised that the difference was not simply about texture.
A body lotion could still have its place in my usual moisturising routine, while the serum could play a different role within that same routine.
I stopped thinking of it as “another moisturiser” and started seeing it as a product with a different purpose in my routine.

After trying it, I understood what really makes a body serum different
At first, I also thought I would have to choose: serum or body lotion.
Once I had tried it, I realised that was not really the point.
The serum did not have to replace my lotion. I could add it to my routine and still use a body lotion whenever my skin needed one.
BOOSTING, for example, can be used on its own or combined with a BODIQ cream or lotion.
That changed the way I thought about it. It was not about adding an extra step just for the sake of it, but about understanding what role each product was actually playing.
And the more I researched, the less sense it made to talk about “a body serum” as though every serum was designed to do exactly the same thing.
I started paying attention to what my skin actually needed
While researching, I came across an article in VOGUE Germany where dermatologist Kerstin Ortlechner explained something that seemed very logical once I read it: the skin does not have exactly the same characteristics or needs on every area of the body.
That made me rethink my original question. Instead of simply asking “Do I need a body serum?”, I started asking “What does my skin need, and what do I want to care for more specifically?”

I had started with MASTER OF BOOSTING Energizing Concentrate simply because I wanted to try a body serum and understand what it could add to my routine. It was only when I looked more closely at the formula that I realised this particular concentrate was especially focused on hydration, radiance and giving the skin a fresher-looking appearance.
Then I discovered that the other BODIQ concentrates had quite different focuses.
MASTER OF AGE-DEFYING Peptides-Rich Night Concentrate is designed as a richer night treatment with peptides, hyaluronic acid and nourishing butters, with a focus on nourishment, softness and elasticity.
MASTER OF REFINING Overnight Skin-Renewal Concentrate addresses a different concern: uneven texture and rough areas. Its overnight formula contains 10% AHA and 0.5% BHA and is specifically designed to refine skin texture.
That was when I stopped thinking of “body serum” as though every formula were interchangeable.

I still used body lotion. What had changed was the way I understood the serum: not as something that had to replace my lotion, but as a way to make my routine more targeted when my skin needed something specific.
And that was probably what surprised me most after trying one. I did not need to add another product simply to make my routine longer; I needed to understand what I actually wanted to use it for.
